Effectively Managing Your Time

We all get the same number of minutes each day—1,440. However, we don’t all use that time the same. “Time Management” is simply the way we decide to utilize our time. Having a written schedule for our day can help us to prioritize what we need to do, stay on task, and achieve our goals for that day. To consciously manage our time, we need to ask ourselves, "Is what I am doing right now worth my time?" The graph below shows how most agents spend a typical work day.

One of my favorite books on time management is Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy. Here are 10 tips from the book on how to effectively

manage your time.

  1. Plan your week on Sunday so it is ready to go Monday morning using the weekly tracker.

  2. Create a daily plan. Use the first 15 minutes of the day to write out a list of priorities for the day.

  3. Complete your most important task first when your energy is highest.

  4. Block out distractions and let staff know you should not be disturbed.

  5. Stop multi-tasking. When we attempt to perform multiple tasks at the same time we are less effective.

  6. Performance over perfection. Perfection comes with time. Get the job 85% of the way there and go for it! You might surprise yourself.

  7. Schedule breaks in between tasks. It's amazing how a quick walk around the block can help you refocus and regenerate.

  8. Make the most of your down time. Use the time you spend waiting in lines or driving around to return phone calls, check email, listen to an inspirational podcast to recapture the time.

  9. Learn to say no; this is one of the hardest things for real estate professionals to do. Don't waste precious time on tasks that do not help you achieve your goal.

  10. Schedule time off whether it's a day during the week or a well-deserved vacation. You owe it to your customers, family and yourself to take a break. One of my favorite sayings is, there is no such thing as a working vacation... it's just called work.

What three things can you do this week to buy back time and make your week more efficient?

Joe’s three things:

1.Turn off the evening news

2.Get to bed one hour earlier

3.Limit social media to 15 minutes twice per day
